5 Winter Skin Care Tips

Updated: Jan 6, 2021

For most people the cold days of winter can bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin. And for those already battling skin issues like eczema or psoriasis the dry cold winter weather only aggravates it. But these 5 winter skin care tips you can help you get the balance back to give you radiant and glowing skin.

1. Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!

Use a good quality moisturizer that is oil based and will provide optimum moisture to your skin. Look for natural and nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, mango butter, coco butter, avocado oil, almond oil, and jojoba oil. Moisturize after showers or baths. Pamper yourself before bed with a relaxing lavender body butter, lotion, or oil.

Avoid moisturizers laden with chemicals and fragrances. Look out for these ingredients on labels: fragrance, synthetic colors (e.g., D&C Red 27 or FD&C blue 1), benzene, phenylmethane, methylbenzene , propylene glycol, diethyl phthalate. While many lotions with synthetic ingredients will add some moisture to your skin, they will cause more harm than good. Not only will they further irritate your already dry and irritated skin, many of these synthetic chemicals are proven skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters, linked to ADHD, can cause reproductive birth defects, cause immune system toxicity, and are carcinogenic.

2. Protect your hands.

The skin on your hands is thinner than other parts of your body and has fewer oil glands. Therefore it is harder to keep hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to dryness, itching, cracking, and irritated hands so wear gloves when outside in the winter and moisturize after washing your hands.

3. Skip the harsh facials.

Especially those with alcohol-based toners or astringents and any invasive chemical peels. I would advise against these normally anyway, but even more so in the winter. Clay-based facials can be wonderful for the skin, but I recommend them more for the warm and humid months. Clays and muds can draw the moisture out of your face and we want to keep the moisture in when it is dry and cold out. I recommend using them less often or skipping them all together during the winter months.

4. Hook up a humidifier.

The more moisture you get in the air will help prevent your skin from drying out.

5. Ban super hot baths and showers.

I know this is tough if you love hot showers and baths. I certainly do and am guilty of this one. I can definitely see how it affects my skin and how much harder I have to work at moisturizing due to this! But it's true that the intense heat breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to loss of moisture. The indicator for me is if my skin is turning red in the shower or bath, I need to turn down the heat!
